Scared to Death and Saddling Up Anyway
One of my favorite sayings is often attributed to John Wayne. "Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway." Writing requires that kind of courage. Fear, doubt, rejection, criticism, and uncertainty are part of the writing journey regardless of skill level. It means the work matters. Every writer eventually reaches moments when the only way forward is to saddle up anyway and write the next page.
We don't need to be fearless, just willing to learn, experiment, revise, fail, and begin again. Few writers produce their best work on the first attempt. Craft develops over time. Confidence develops over time. Looking back, many writers discover that the goals that once felt impossible became achievable because they continued showing up, continued learning, and continued writing, one page at a time.
